"Between our new spot and Bloom in San Juan Capistrano, it will be fun to have two great restaurants as bookends of the historic Ortega Highway in OC," Russ Bendel Jr. said in a statement quoted by the Orange County Business Journal on September 15, 2026.
The new spot is Creekside Restaurant & Bar. It's going into Sendero Marketplace, the shopping center at Ortega Highway and Antonio Parkway that most of The Ranch passes on the way in or out. The Business Journal said it would open "this October." That article ran four weeks ago. On October 12, the restaurant's own website still says "Coming Soon: Fall of 2026."
Creekside brings back the center's sit-down dinner room, run by a group with a long Orange County track record, and it arrives well before Esencia Commons adds anything comparable. Getting there on the right night takes a little sorting out, because the official listings tell four different stories.
Suite E6 has hosted a dinner room before
Creekside gives its address as 30865 Gateway Place, Suite E6, Rancho Mission Viejo, CA 92694. Longtime residents will know that building. The Orange County Register profiled Scarlet Kitchen & Lounge at 30865 Gateway Place back in February 2020. Public court records list Scarlet Kitchen & Lounge LLC at Suite E-6 as well. Same street number, same suite. Creekside is very likely moving into that former space, although no announcement we found says so outright.
That matters because of what else is in the center. Sendero Marketplace's directory lists Bagel Bistro, In-N-Out Burger, Jersey Mike's Subs, Morena's Mexican Cuisine, Nekter Juice Bar, Starbucks and Yogurtland. That's a strong lineup for a morning coffee run, a post-practice burger or a frozen yogurt stop. A late reservation with cocktails and a steak is a different kind of evening, and Creekside is built for it.
Creekside also comes first on the calendar. The community's retail page lists Esencia Commons, a planned 175,000-square-foot center, as "Coming in Mid 2027," with no tenants named yet. For at least the next several months, the sit-down dinner option closest to most front doors on The Ranch will be at Gateway Place.
Who is behind it
RJB Restaurant Group belongs to Bendel and his partners: Executive Chef Jared Cook, Beverage Directors Gabe Whorley and Mike Alvarez, and Operations Vice President Kyle Simpson. According to the Business Journal, Creekside is the group's eighth Orange County business. The others are Vine and Parlor Pizzeria in San Clemente, Bloom in San Juan Capistrano, Sapphire and The Pantry in Laguna Beach, Ironwood in Laguna Hills and Olea in Newport Beach. The same paper named Bendel its Restaurateur of the Year in 2018 and named Cook its Chef of the Year for 2024.
The "bookends" comment is literal. Bloom sits at the San Juan Capistrano end of Ortega Highway, and Creekside sits where the highway meets Antonio Parkway. Bendel told the Business Journal the name comes from San Juan Creek, which runs directly behind the restaurant.
WhatNow, which covered the opening on October 9, reports that the team's experience includes Fleming's Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar, Vine, Pelican Grill and The Ranch Restaurant.
What's on the posted menu
The Business Journal describes the food as "every day American fare." The menu already posted on Creekside's website shows a fairly wide price range, so a quick bar stop and a full dinner will cost very different amounts.
| Section | Item | Posted price |
|---|---|---|
| Starters | Rosemary focaccia | $7 |
| Starters | Pimento cheese dip | $11 |
| Starters | Chili cheese fries | $15 |
| Starters | Heirloom tomato and burrata | $15 |
| Starters | Albacore tuna tartare | $19 |
| Starters | Mexican white shrimp scampi | $24 |
| Soup and salads | Mixed greens | $13 |
| Soup and salads | Brisket-and-pork chili | $14 |
| Soup and salads | Crispy chicken salad | $27 |
| Soup and salads | Canadian salmon salad | $28 |
| Soup and salads | Prime flat-iron wedge salad | $31 |
| Bar | Mocktails | $12 |
| Bar | Specialty craft cocktails | $17 |
Look at the two ends of that list. Focaccia, pimento cheese dip and a mocktail come to $30 before tax and tip. The prime flat-iron wedge salad costs $31 by itself. That spread fits a room meant for two kinds of visits, a low-key drink at the bar after work and a planned dinner out.
The entrées aren't priced online yet. WhatNow reports the lineup will include seafood cioppino, prime short rib pot roast, flat iron steak frites, BBQ pork ribs and a BBQ Jidori half chicken, along with sandwiches, salads, and desserts such as a Nutella banana split and a skillet brownie.
Dinner only, starting at 4
Creekside will be an evening restaurant. The Business Journal says it will open at 4 p.m. daily. Its OpenTable listing shows 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 4 to 9:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Those hours were posted before opening and could change once the doors open.
So there's no lunch and no weekend brunch on the current schedule. A 4 p.m. start does give families an early dinner slot and gives commuters a place to stop on the way home up Antonio Parkway.
The same OpenTable listing shows a bar and lounge, a full bar, patio and outdoor dining, and an outdoor firepit. Given the name, a lot of people will expect creek views from the patio. No source we found confirms what the patio actually looks out on. No happy hour has been published either.
Why the listings disagree
This is where planning a first visit gets tricky. Each official source shows a different snapshot of the same suite.
| Source | What it says now |
|---|---|
| Creekside's website | "Coming Soon: Fall of 2026" at 30865 Gateway Place, E6, Rancho Mission Viejo, CA 92694 |
| Orange County Business Journal, Sept. 15 | Opening "this October" in "Mission Viejo" |
| OpenTable | Labeled "Coming Soon!" while showing reservation time slots and hours |
| Sendero Marketplace directory | Still lists Scarlet Kitchen & Lounge |
Two of these mismatches have practical consequences. The Business Journal headline and the OpenTable page both say Mission Viejo. The restaurant's own site uses Rancho Mission Viejo and the 92694 ZIP code. To find the right listing or map pin, search with the restaurant's own city and ZIP.
The address can trip you up too. Westar Associates, the center's property manager, lists Sendero Marketplace as a whole at 30721 Gateway Place. Creekside's building is 30865 Gateway Place. Both are correct, but only one of them puts you at the restaurant's door.
OpenTable shows time slots next to a "Coming Soon!" label, so it isn't clear yet whether a booking made there will be honored on that date. The directory entry for Scarlet looks like a page that hasn't been updated, not a sign that two restaurants share the suite.
Before you book that first dinner
- Check creeksidermv.com first. It's the only source run by the restaurant, and its "Stay In The Know" signup is where opening news is most likely to show up first.
- Navigate to 30865 Gateway Place, Rancho Mission Viejo, 92694. Don't use the center's 30721 address or a "Mission Viejo" pin.
- Plan for evenings only. Under the posted schedule, the kitchen opens at 4 p.m. every day and closes at 9 p.m., or 9:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
- Treat an OpenTable slot as tentative until the "Coming Soon" label is gone.
- Use the menu table to budget. The posted starters run from $7 to $24, salads run up to $31, and cocktails are $17, with entrée prices still to come.
Once Creekside opens, there will be a full-bar dinner spot with a firepit patio a short drive from Sendero, Esencia and Rienda. Until then, the date on the restaurant's own homepage is the one to trust.
At The Archuletta Team, we keep a close eye on what's opening along Gateway Place because it's part of daily life on The Ranch, and our new office is at Sendero Marketplace too. When Creekside confirms its opening night, we'll share it with our neighbors. If you're thinking about selling a home within a few minutes of this corner, we'd be glad to show you how we bring that kind of local detail into every listing.
